De Havilland DH 60G Gipsy Moth
1/3 scale
Engine: Super Tigre 3000
Wingspan: 10 ft.
Weight: 32lb.
Modified D. Boddington design
The model represents Gipsy Moth G-AAAH Jason which was the Moth used by Amy Johnson for her solo flight from England to Australia.
Structure: Fuselage is spruce framework covered in 1/32in birch plywood.Wings have ramin spars and 1/8in balsa sheet ribs. Tailplane and fin are built up from balsa. Fabric covering is doped nylon.
Flying characteristics: Very stable, wide speed range. Model is capable of most of the basic aerobatic manoeuvres, rolls being the worst. Has been successfully flown in very strong winds.
First flown in 1987, this model has won trophies at many events in the
UK - even for scale pylon racing...
Current status: Damaged due to hitting a signpost beside the runway
during a
competition at Woodvale in August 1997. Sold on and believed to be under rebuild.
Definitely one of my all-time favourite models.
